Chimpanzees in Uganda Sex Starved
Recent scientific studies done by Klaus Zuberbuhler a psychologist and Townsend Simon of the University of Saint Andrews on the mating calls; that is the noises made by female chimpanzees while trying to attract male chimps during a 16 months study uncovered some startling revelations. These studies where done in Budongo forest found in the Murchison falls national park area, in north western Uganda. It was found that female chimpanzees are rare promiscuous, desiring sex with as many male chimpanzees as they can but are rather shy about showing it. This shyness is a ploy that the chimpanzees use not to attract the attention of the high ranking females, which would endanger not only their life but also their chances of mating with the alpha males in the group. However, all caution is thrown to wind when the alpha males are near them. They tend to make more mating calls when the alpha male is closer to them and the studies revealed that the rare promiscuous nature of the female chimpanzees is to lessen the tendency by animals to kill young ones that they deem not to be their offspring. Multiple mating causes the chimpanzees to think they are the actual "fathers" when in fact they might not be. The scientists said competition among the wild females chimpanzees was quite stiff and therefore they make tactical sounds when attracting males so as to reduce the danger associated with the competition. And also to ensure that they also benefit from the alpha males. However, there was no evidence that alpha males competed with each other for sex with the females when they made the mating calls. There was also no correlation between a females fertility and copulation calls.
